Good for you and more importantly good for your family. I know a lot of people who are stuck in dentistry because their spouses think they need to “suck it up” and won’t support trading the financial security to finding happiness. I get it, but I’d hate to live my life stuck that way.

I kept complaining about it to my family until they finally remarked that I kept complaining yet didn’t do anything about it. I realized a change had to be made instead of wallowing in unhappiness.

Thanks, Andrea! I love how your phrased that– “how tough it is to choose happiness.” You would think we all choose that and that happiness is the easiest most obvious choice, but sometimes it is the hardest choice to make. It is amazing how we can get so lost along the way. I love your story and courage to find the change you wanted and needed in your life. You are definitely living the dream!

I have made the career change a while ago, and found myself much happier. I went from working in a firm to being a sole practitioner, which allows a lot of freedom in jobs I choose. My husband did not like me working for a firm (all men in architecture) so he was happier when I left.

Oh, how true that quote is. My mind can definitely be my biggest asset and my biggest enemy at times! Good point about the mindset. It reminds me of 1 very horrible day in the office when I perf’d a tooth. I was in such a bad mood all morning, and I didn’t know why. Usually if I started out a day feeling down, my mood would pick up once I started talking to my first patient. It didn’t happen this day. Then the perf happened on my 1:00 patient! To me, that was the end of the world. I never thought my day could get worse. So the question is, did my bad mood make my day bad, or was I in a bad mood because I was having a premonition that something bad was going to happen that day? I like to think it was the second answer. There is no way my thoughts can have that much power! I do believe mindset has power, and that’s a great thing, but I’d never want to give some of the stupid, crazy thoughts that go through my brain that much credit. 🙂

—-A great thinker once wrote that… no not me just now.. 🙂 but some other great man of letters.
I guess the quick version is: life is what you make it. some days are pure misery, others are quite fun. I often find my ‘mindset’ at the begining of the day dictates how the day goes.. regardless of if I am at work, or not, pain in the ass patients, or not…..
A good support group (spouce, family, friends, etc) always helps, but i think the ‘trick’ is how to stay in the ‘positive thought-mode’ without donning a white robe, or meds, etc.
…..and kids can make a hell out of anything…..
I’m off to the Lido deck.
