In reply to <a href="https://www.lolabeescareercoaching.com/the-golden-rule-reversed/#comment-14857">Eric R</a>.

Interesting points about med school. I have heard other people say that too. I would imagine that there are doc's who feel that same sense of worry, responsibility, and ownership for their patients and their outcomes. We really need a class in dental/med school or even in LIFE that teaches us about boundaries!

You delve into so many good points here... but the most important one is self-care. I still wonder why dental schools design their educational system to be that of a hazing ritual. Perhaps physicians go through something similar with internship and residency --but for some reason, I get the feeling that most physicians have a much more balanced and healthy perspective regarding their patients. That is not to say they don't feel bad when a particular treatment may not be successful. But do they ever feel the need to blame themselves like so many dentists do? Part of it has to do with the "owning the tooth" fallacy. That is like saying the physician owns my shoulder or ankle! No, they do the best they can with what my body has given them to work with. The oral cavity has just as many variables and influences as all the other parts of the body. It's a shame that so many instructors in dental school refused to relate that fact to their students.
