The teachers we had always told us how much worse they were treated when they were in school. I wonder if that's always going to be a universal sentiment. What you say about the part-time instructors is a sentiment that many in our class shared. I don't know why this mentality occurs in dental schools. Your comment reminds me of a female instructor who so obviously bullied me for no reason at all. You would think at this professional level of education, we would integrate a higher level of respect into our teacher-student relationships. I'm going to post a follow up on CT's interview next week, and you'll get to see how their education was structured, and it will give you much more insight into why she felt such a lack of guidance. It's really an interesting comparison in the model they used at her school in Hong Kong compared to here in the US.

I agree -- powerful on so many levels. The fact that CT was so distraught while working in the root canal treatment center says so much. I never understood why so many instructors were not there to help us -- but to demean us, create anxiety, and not actually teach. A frequent comment was "If you can't handle the stress of dental school, you'll never make it in the real world". But we were there to learn, exchange ideas, and develop our skills -- under guidance. It seemed like the full-time instructors were frustrated dentists, and took it out on the students. The ones who were part-time, and simultaneously working in the "real world", more often wanted to teach and help us grow and actually enjoy the learning process. Unfortunately, they were not the majority. The dental education system, at least at the time I was in school, followed a very poor and harmful model.
