I don’t know about the castillos, but I think it can depend on the setting too. The Tulum ruins, for example, are not that impressive,but they are perched on a cliff on the Caribbean Sea, which makes them amazing!

I was disappointed when I saw them, but looking back they were pretty cool nonetheless.
