I remember chatting with you years ago, and I’m so glad you have found something that has worked for you. It takes dedication and commitment, and as you know, it’s not always easy, but it’s worth it. This is why I love the side gig. It helps remind you that there’s more to life than dentistry. And who knows… most of the people I know who have left dentistry have turned their side gigs into full gigs.

I still am not able to leave dentistry entirely but have focused heavily on side gigs and areas in dentistry that aren’t as stressful (for me) and am at a place that’s a lot better than it was. I worked my ass off making connections before I landed on side gigs. I’ve realized that temping is a TOTAL load off my brain and it works for me. Yes, it’s still dentistry but the mental load of staff and TRULY caring what patients think is totally gone. It’s low stress…ish. The downside is it’s more unstable as in you don’t know where or when your next gig is, but for me, it’s working so far. Really grateful I’ve leveraged these connections, but I worked hard on it to get here.

Great to hear from you! Glad you were taken care of. Having that backup when something goes wrong allows you to take a breath and feel free. That’s the thing… we are so attached to dentistry (understandably,) but when we let it go, we don’t really miss much about it!

I retired early 2 years ago due to severe CMC joint arthritis. I had surgery on my non-dominant hand without success. Thank goodness I had an “own occupation “ disability policy, but surprisingly, quitting suddenly and unceremoniously was really difficult after 30 years of practice.
I highly recommend if anyone is planning to stay with dentistry, make sure to check into disability insurance, if you haven’t already.
I will say that now that I’ve been away from the profession for a couple of years, I don’t really miss much about it.
