Don’t feel stupid for being nervous and anxious. Those feelings are real and valid! Besides, public speaking is the #1 fear most people have. It’s a great reminder to not allow the fear to paralyze us. How did it go? Did you win a trip?

I am another one who needed this. About to go for a French speech competition and I am freaking out already. The first time to compete and give a speech in French in my life outside of classroom setting. I may even be able to get a free trip to France out of this if I win. It is such a small thing in comparison to your battle with cancer treatment, so I kind of feel stupid for being so nervous and anxious. I will always remember that courage cannot exist without fear, and I will keep going.

Two songs with lyrics that immediately come to mind…. James Taylor’s “Secret O’ Life” (“It’s okay to feel afraid, but don’t let that stand in your way”) and P!nk’s “Glitter in the Air” (“Have you ever looked fear in the face and said I just don’t care?”). I remind myself of those lines whenever I’m faced with some situation I am fearful of or tentative about. The incredible thing is that once I come out on the other side, I feel like I’ve grown a hundred times over. And some things that were once so intimidating are now more comfortable than I ever imagined. And I know there will be more situations ahead that evoke fear…. but it’s “ok to feel afraid”, because I know what the outcome will be…. And before I know it, I’ve reached the top of the stairs once again!

I am doing something that I’ve always wanted to do and I hope that it will start me on the path to finally change careers. I am not entirely sure about my feelings right now but I am able to realize one thing that I am really proud of…I think I have finally learned that lesson that says fear and doubt must be part of the process. I am not frozen by my fears, I can finally argue with my doubts, and I can actually tell them both to just go away, I need to sleep. At first I though my feelings were numb because I am so used to the anxiety that comes with such events, or maybe over confident, that this is beyond me and I won’t be able to go through with it.The outcome doesn’t really matter at this point, what really matter is that I have stared the process. I am finally able to really believe that I am ready to take the risk, ready to dance with my fear as my partner.
