This reminds me... a few years ago I was having some dental work done, and I remember having such a strong feeling of gratitude for my dentist and assistant because they seemed to be taking such great care of me. I realized it was such a wonderful feeling. Then I remembered it may have been nitrous talking. ;) But really I did feel so cared for. I remember thinking it was such an interesting.

JustbemyselfCT – Don’t be fooled into thinking that sitting in the dental chair as a patient is the same as being on the other side… We all know that it isn’t, but it’s very easy to fall into that trap! I often had patients tell me they wished their job was as non-stressful as mine. What??!! I guess I made it look easy, from their perspective — boy did I have them fooled! You know in your heart what is right for you…. and I think you’re already there, despite the normal amount of doubting that comes to haunt all of us. Keep pushing that aside and continue to move forward!

Thank you for this wonderful interview. I am happy to hear stories from people like Apple who have been in dental school and done that. I finished 3 years of the six-year dentistry program and left. My grades were good and my patients loved me. However, I was miserable. I was at a dental appointment today and felt nostalgic when I was sitting in the patient’s chair. I transferred to the Arts program in my school and it has almost been 2 years. I still have a year towards graduation. At the times when I think back on dental school, I often doubt myself and wonder if I made the right choice leaving dentistry. I always come back to your blog and be reminded that it was necessary for me to change my path to take better care of myself. Thanks again.

Awesome interview! And great insight for those who are questioning their decision, or feeling that it is time to take a different path. I may have posted this on one of your prior columns, but it’s worth repeating: A favorite singer of mine has a tattoo on his arm that reads: “If it feels like home, follow its path”. I remind myself of that daily, even during the challenging times in my new chosen career — which does, in fact, feel like home.
