Great story, I too had a similar experience. Looking square at the lights near the end of the high school tunnel, I had no idea what I wanted to do for a career.
I really didn't want to go to college, I hated school, and a friend's dad owned a dental laboratory and I checked it out. It was pretty cool, art, engineering, and unique problem solving daily-- shouldn't get bored easily. So I went to school for that, it was great, spent 10yrs doing that had a one-man crown and bridge operation.

Unfortunately, I was breathing in too much of what I was fabricating. Yes, I used masks and suction but stuff still made it through, and I was developing asthma, so I had to do something. My father-in-law owned a mortgage company, but it was a commission only and I had to market for my own customers. I couldn't use my current customer base because it would be difficult to convince a dentist that after doing your crown and bridge work for the past ten years that I was also an expert mortgage loan officer.

I tried to do both for about 6 months but I wasn't very good at either. It wasn't until I was totally committed to the mortgage industry that I began to thrive. 30+ years now couldn't be happier, it's funny though, I still get to solve unique problems daily.

Nickey, it's so hard to feel like you don't enjoy your work everyday, and also to know you're not getting compensated enough for it. It's hard to be a dentist, and most people can't do what you do. Remember that if you can do this work that most people can't do, then you can do anything. It's just a matter of exploring and getting curious about your options. If you're on Facebook, you should join my private group for dental professionals only. It's called Dentist Side Gigs. You'll get more support there too.

Wow just wow, feels like my story to the T because This 30th of December 2021 i'll be completing 11 years as a Dentist and I know how I have spend those 11 years in such pressure and depression and secondly in my free time I watch channels like American Homes and HGTV which caters to what MARK is doing right now and it interests me heavily. And I really can't believe I found your blog. I hate this job so much that if today someone gives me a job which only offer daily wages which is not less than what i am making right now by doing Dentistry 10 hours a day, i'll be happy to grab it. I belong to INDIA and here no one consider a Dentist as a medical/healthcare practitioners. India is the country which produces maximum number of dentists in an academic year as compared to all the other countries of the world. But there is no or few government jobs for them as compared to other health care professions. Competition is so high that you will find a Dental clinic in every nook and crany. And the condition is so worst that Dentist as well as Patients are nagotiating even for a Dollar and if you are lucky enough to get a job at a clinic as a dentist they get only 200-400 dollars worth salary for 8 hours daily for a month. And on top of that Corona has broken the backbone of dentistry and what all savings I made in these years I lost them in corona. So it's been really hard and i am on the verge of breakdown. I am so desperate to quit but don't know what will I do if I quit which is keeping me from not quitting. Hope I find some hope and inspiration from your blog. Thanks a lot .

Hannah, I'm so glad you found us too. It is so helpful to know that what you're feeling is not uncommon! If you can try little things/ small steps to explore what you really love, that is a good way to integrate it into the realities of having to work. You have some big changes on the horizon with your move, so it will take focus, but you can do it!

First of all, I can't believe I found your blog. Such a relief.
Also, I have a few ideas about the career I wanna switch to, but as Mark said, most of them require a considerable investment in the beginning. But I've only practiced as a dentist for 1 year and I haven't saved much. I wouldn't be able to save within the next 5 years either as I'm immigrating from a third-world country and I have expenses to cover and expensive dental equivalency exams to clear.
That's why I kinda feel stuck.

Hi, I'm basically you ! Like literally every word you said, I was gonna type it. So I'm wondering did you go on that world tour? How did things turn out for you? Do you think it's a good idea for me to start traveling as well? I'm just 1 year into my dental practice and I hate it. I thought a long break from it all would help alongside traveling and making new connections, exploring, etc.

Hi Nt, Yes!! There are a lot of us out there. it is a tough decision to make and a big process to go through, and all the guilt and worrying is a normal part of it, but you can do this. If you want to hear other stories, I have a series of posts on this blog under the "Celebrating New Beginnings" title. You can put that in the search bar. Another place you might look on the blog is under the section titled "My Journey Out of Dentistry," Or I have a section on Posts that share tips on how to change. You can find them on the main Blog page here: https://lolabeescareercoaching.com/blog/

Keep us posted as to how this shapes up for you!

Hi there, I just want to say it’s so reassuring to know that others feel the way I do. My path has literally mirrored James to a ‘T’. I have finally made the decision to leave for my own peace of mind and happiness, however am still at a loss as to where to go next. All I know is that this chapter has to be closed. The daily reminders and constant badgering as to why I would dream of leaving such a fabulous profession are the hardest. Especially when you empower yourself to make the change and then the emotional and intellectual guilt kick in. I would love to hear more stories of others brave decisions and how they get on ?
