You've provided very valuable information to many people here. I can totally appreciate the five steps you described.... especially #4.

It reminded me of the few times I was on a plane going somewhere on vacation.... a week-long break from dentistry! As the plane took off, I felt a definite relief... but sadly, it only ever lasted a short while. I knew I wouldn't be having the same feeling on the return flight. Despite the brilliance of the sun and clouds outside my window seat, I still could feel a black cloud hanging over me. It was almost impossible to shake. I dreaded everything that would be awaiting me upon my return.

I knew something wasn't right. I should NOT have been feeling that way.

These days, I occasionally am overwhelmed and burnt out from the journey I've chosen now. But there is a huge difference. When I feel this way, I step back, take a break, and do some of the things you've mentioned above. Each time, I've been invigorated, re-energized, and excited to soon be returning to something which I absolutely love. I welcome and look forward to it, instead of dreading it as I did in the past.

The black cloud that hung over me has dissolved into nothingness.

Just something to consider.

Thanks so much, Shivani! Can't wait to read your article for the ADA! That is awesome! It is so difficult to discern, and it's so nuanced that I don't even feel like this post covers all the elements of it. You can always link back to me. Thank you!! <3

This was very insightful! I just finished writing an article for the ADA on ways to prevent burnout, and I was struggling with how to guide those who feel my prevention steps aren't enough. It's difficult to discern if it's burnout or if it's the wrong career. This is the perfect resource to share to help others understand this fine line. I'm totally going to link it in the article if that's okay with you! Thanks for taking the time to share your story and empower others to ask the hard questions!!
