In reply to <a href="https://www.lolabeescareercoaching.com/best-year-ever/#comment-5134">Eric R</a>.

Eric I love that take on birthdays, and I love how you describe the different things that may come our way in a year... especially the reminder that there are events we think will be huge obstacles that we seem to breeze through. That happens all the time! I may just have to adopt this concept of a Golden Day.

Thank you for sharing your personal detail about your cancer risk. It does not at all diminish anything. That gives you a different appreciation for health that some of us take for granted. I imagine it can be scary every time you have to face the possibility of it. I"m so glad to hear all continues to go well, and will continuously hope for that for you.

Since you bring up my celebration, I'm happy to share with you that I had an MRI, and it shows no visible tumors! I still need to have the lesions surgically removed and biopsied for the final status, but that is a great step!

As always, thanks for sharing your insights. I always appreciate them!

Great post! The simple fact is, there are good and bad things that happen in every calendar year... that's why I never understood why people celebrate the change of a date with such fervor. (Ok, I kind of get it -- I'm not a total stick in the mud!). But I really like how and when a good friend of mine chooses to celebrate New Year's Day.... on his birthday. That day is everyone's Personal New Year. I always wish him a "Happy New Year" on his birthday, in addition to the obligatory "Happy Birthday". But "Happy New Year" seems to have more meaning on someone's birthday. I always remind myself of the same thing on my birthday... and I realize that there may be incredibly good things that happen during the forthcoming year -- but just as easily, there may be unexpected challenges and extreme disappointments. There may be obstacles I never thought I'd ever have to face, yet I may fly through things that I'd spent weeks worrying about. It is unpredictable and random... but when you make the "New Year" your OWN -- specifically on your birthday -- somehow it feels more empowering. Not completely sure why, but it just does.

An acquaintance of mine was diagnosed with cancer many years ago. She also has an annual celebration... the anniversary of when her doctor proclaimed her to be cancer-free. She named it her "Golden Day", and celebrates the day every year. I guess she liked the word "golden" so she chose that. I'm impressed how she uses that day to pause and remember all that she went through and how she overcame it. She doesn't bury it in the past, but acknowledges it.... and has a celebration to empower her to keep on moving forward with her life. I get the feeling that she appreciates how every day matters. I learned from that.

Not to get into too many personal details here, or to diminish all you have been going through... but I have a condition which makes me much more susceptible to esophageal cancer than the average person. I don't talk about it much. I watch my diet a lot and don't worry about it, but this year I was a little more concerned when my Dr said that there has been a rise in esophageal cancer cases. I usually have about 10 - 15 biopsies every 2 years. All came out good this time... but it really puts things into perspective. Just reminds me of what is and isn't important in life. Like my friend who has the Golden Day, I've learned to appreciate every day and not let things get to me as much.

I can't wait to hear how you will be celebrating your "Golden Day"! Because you should. I know you will. I'm expecting it.
