There’s so many reasons why dentistry was eating you inside. While I sympathize, I don’t agree with your rationalization. 1) exhausting to lack empathy in a profession that serves human beings 2)You compare groceries to healthcare. You really went into a healthcare profession as someone who doesn’t believe healthcare is a human right. 3) You were probably one of those dentists who would prefer to extract bones from people who can’t afford root canals/crowns while simultaneously shaming them for “waiting so long for preventative care”. Those avoidant patients aren’t simply careless and to think so as someone who literally studied dentistry is magnificently reductive and exemplary of the attitude problem that is so common in dental professionals in the United States. I would bargain that patients with insurance that have high levels of coverage for dental work are significantly less anxious/avoidant! Amazing what money can do! 4)You complain about spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on education in your lifetime without acknowledging how much privilege comes with that statement. 5)maybe you went into the field for the wrong reasons and as a result regretted your choice

I have to put this out there. I am over 60 and have some serious health issues. I have spent loads of funds taking care of my teeth. In February this year I was diagnosed with an abcessed 40 year old gold crown back molar. I maintained it at home using hydrogen peroxide etc. until June. I sought dental treatment and was prescribed Clindamycin 300 mg. I am not exaggerating when I tell you after three days my friends witnessed me near death. My dentist got back to me eventually and for lack of a better way to say this, didn’t give a crap…

In reply to Eric R. Amazing that we've all experienced ALL of this, isn't it? We dentists must need to have darker senses of humor, so we can get through these tough things with patients. It is a little easier to laugh after the fact, isn't it? That is amazing that your patient dropped her kids off! Either they really trusted you, or you had a really awesome play corner!!

This is awesome… and funny… and SO true! Having been retired from dentistry for 4 years now (after 35 years), I can honestly say that I have experienced every one of these scenarios.

I even had a patient drop her 3 kids off at the office so they could play in the kids’ section of the waiting room — while she went shopping! Like the front desk staff was supposed to monitor them?? Well, I guess that means she really trusted us… But really??

And although I find these anecdotes a bit amusing now… the fact is, at the moment I was experiencing them, my blood was boiling. I can’t say that I miss this aspect of dentistry one bit.
